The beta program began in March of 2015 to a limited number of Skype users. The only piece of software that needs to be installed is a browser plugin, available for Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox.

Those days will soon be behind us, as Skype has opened the Skype for Web beta to users in the US and UK, meaning that anyone in those countries with a Mac or PC running a current browser can give the Web application a try. Internet calling pioneer Skype has always required a standalone app of some sort in order to make audio or video phone calls from your laptop or desktop computer.
